Spirit

Espírito · Filosofia Decolonial

The intellectual tradition of the kilombo. Afro-Brazilian cosmology, decolonial theory, the history of Black Atlantic thought — studied with the same rigour as movement or land. This pillar is for people who want to understand, not just practise.

03

Thought as practice. Philosophy as survival.

The quilombo was always also an intellectual project. To build a fugitive community in the middle of a slave society was to assert a different understanding of what humanity could look like — a philosophical claim made through collective action. The Spirit pillar begins there.

Reading with Kilombo Tenondé means engaging with Frantz Fanon, Lélia Gonzalez, Achille Mbembe, Denise Ferreira da Silva, and the Candomblé cosmological tradition — alongside historical texts, contemporary theory, and the philosophical implications of the capoeira angola practice itself.

This is a course of study, not a lecture series. Students are expected to read, to write, and to bring their own contexts to the material.

Three

Cosmology. Critique. Community.

Cosmology — The Spirit pillar begins with Afro-Brazilian and African diasporic cosmological systems: Candomblé, Ubuntu, the conceptual world of the orixás, and the philosophical structures underlying the capoeira angola practice. Not as belief systems to be adopted, but as intellectual frameworks that reveal what Enlightenment philosophy has obscured.

Critique — The second thread is decolonial theory in its fullest sense: the political economy of colonialism and its legacies, the structure of epistemic violence, the ongoing project of racial capitalism, and the intellectual traditions that name and resist these structures.

Community — The third thread is the most practical: how these ideas manifest in actual collective life. Case studies in solidarity economy, collective land stewardship, educational sovereignty, and the specific project of the kilombo as a contemporary experiment in living otherwise.
